The First Decade
(1988–1997) : The Establishment of a Secondary Care Hospital

The establishment of Thammasat University Hospital was made possible through the royal grace of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (King Rama IX), who bestowed the name “Thammasat University Hospital Chalermprakiet.” Construction of the hospital began during the presidency of Professor Khunying Nongyao Chaiseri. The initiative was driven by the devotion of M.R.Suwaphan Sanitwong heirs, the Thai Military Bank Public Company Limited, the Foundation for Thammasat Chalermprakiet Hospital, Thammasat University alumni, the Thammasat community, and the general public.

On November 3, 1986, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (King Rama IX), together with His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (then the Crown Prince, now King Rama X), graciously presided over the foundation stone-laying ceremony. King Bhumibol also offered his royal vision for the hospital, stating,

“This hospital must be a place of refuge for the sick—not only for the Thammasat community, nearby villagers, or industrial workers, but also for people living far away who will undoubtedly come to receive medical care.“

Thammasat University Hospital Chalermprakiet opened its doors to the public for the first time on December 5, 1987, as a royal tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (King Rama IX) on the auspicious occasion of his 60th birthday. Later, on March 29, 1988, His Majesty graciously appointed Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to officiate the hospital's official opening ceremony on his behalf.

In its initial phase, the hospital comprised only two buildings providing medical services to the public :

        • M.R.Suwaphan Sanitwong Building, which served emergency and outpatient departments, along with administrative offices.

        • Thai Military Bank Building, which offered inpatient care for all types of patients.

The hospital initially provided medical services to students and staff of Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus, and later expanded to serve the general public. It was established as a secondary-level hospital, offering care in major specialized fields, with a capacity of 100 inpatient beds and serving approximately 60,000 outpatients annually.
